How to Be Single: The Guide to Independent Misery

I know what you’re thinking. A week has passed since Valentine’s Day and still no Deadpool review. “But Pegboards loves comic book movies,” you say, “so what gives?” Alright, I said that so you didn’t have to.

The truth is I haven’t seen Deadpool yet. I don’t know if Kevin has seen it yet because I haven’t asked him. What I do know is that when your girlfriend asks you to go see a chick flick with her, you put on a smile and secretly hope that it’s actually good so that you don’t have to pretend that you liked it.

So how did How to Be Single turn out? Well, after the movie, my girlfriend asked me if I liked it and when I said yes, she smirked and said, “You don’t have to lie, but thanks for putting up with it.”

Kung Fu Panda 3: If It Ain’t Broke, Please Don’t Try and Fix It

Sequels in Hollywood are a dime a dozen. For every original idea that gets adapted into a feature length film, we get 20 sequels or spinoffs based on existing properties. It’s easier to go with what worked before rather than come up with something new. Unsurprisingly, this approach fails as often as it succeeds, particularly in animation (Shrek the Third, Cars 2 and Minions all come to mind).

I’m happy to report that this isn’t the case with Kung Fu Panda 3. While it won’t make you forget about Toy Story 3 any time soon, it completes one of the better animated trilogies of our time. It all feels very familiar, but that’s okay.

Survivor Kaoh Rong Episode 1 Review

Come on in guys for my Survivor Kaoh Rong Episode 1 review where I use classic Survivor quotes to assess the latest episode.

You might recall that I previously wrote about Survivor during the mostly controversial season of Worlds Apart. The emotional baggage behind that season was so intense that I decided to take a break for Survivor Cambodia. And now, in the spirit of Cambodia, I am giving this column a second chance. Will the column step up and seize the opportunity like Jeremy? Or will it be super creepy and fail like Vytas? Let’s find out.

13 episodes, 3 months, 1 sole Survivor blog…Sorry I apologize for that. I’ve always wanted to do that.

Alright, go ahead and take the cap off the pen and click below. Oh and watch out for spoilers crawling into your ear.

The Walking Dead Death Rankings (S6 Ep10 Preview)

Welcome back to Pegboards’ Walking Dead Death Rankings!

As a reminder every week Jesse and Kevin will provide rankings based on who they think will die next. The further down the list, the more likely they are to die. They get points based on where the character is on our list. For instance, if Rick dies this week then Kevin will have four points and Jesse will have two points.

This week Kevin reminisces about the time he almost shot a rocket launcher. Meanwhile Jesse dishes out some legal advice and takes the heat for a character’s miraculous recovery.

The Walking Dead Death Rankings (S6 Ep9 Preview)

Welcome back to Pegboards’ Walking Dead Death Rankings!

It feels like it’s been a long time since we got our fill of predicting fictional character’s deaths and to be honest these rankings themselves almost didn’t survive the first half of season 6! Alas Jesse and I are feeling revitalized to pull a “walker” and bring this blog back to life! Hopefully with less blood and guts though.

As a reminder every week Jesse and I will provide rankings based on who we think will die next. The further down the list, the more likely they are to die. We give ourselves points based on where the character is on our list. For instance, if Rick dies this week then Kevin will have four points and Jesse will have two points.

How did the first half of season 6 go you ask? Well Jesse and I have a history of ties. We tied in fantasy football, we tied in pick em and we are tied with our love of Leonardo DiCaprio. Unfortunately in this case we did not tie. Why did I bring up our history of ties then? Well Jesse has a 2 point lead over me and I am very upset about it and I want him to remember that he isn’t better than me. If you want to read all of our hilarious insights into how the first half of season 6 went you can go ahead and read everything we had to say here.

Season Score: Jesse 39 Kevin  37

Star Wars: A Little Late to the Party

Part of the problem with running a blog at the expense of your free time, and not getting paid to do it, is that it’s hard to be timely. Everyone and their mother had done a spoiler discussion for The Force Awakens already, but here we two months later finally getting around to our version. Do we add anything that you haven’t heard before? Maybe not, but we had fun doing it so hopefully you have fun reading it.

This One’s for Peyton

As you get older you start realizing how much time you have wasted in your youth. This realization can easily make you feel depressed and anxious. Why didn’t I learn to play the guitar? Why didn’t I read all of those books? It’s a very difficult feeling to shake. You start making new goals and new promises to yourself. You imagine all you can accomplish if you just buckle down, starting today. You tell yourself there is still time.

Unfortunately sometimes it is too late. Sometimes your window of opportunity has closed. Sometimes you have no choice but to give up on a dream, a goal, or even a legacy.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Review

I thought it was a bunch of mumbo-jumbo. A magical power holding together good and evil? The Dark Side? The Light? The crazy thing is, it’s true. All of it. The Jedi? They’re real.

There are some things in life that are indescribable. One of the most endearing effects that a movie can have on us is how they make us feel, for that is how we truly measure what they mean to us and how much we enjoy them as an audience. Maybe that sounds a little corny, but being corny is one of the time-honored traditions in Hollywood. The frenzy that surrounds the release of a new Star Wars movie is another one.

As I sit here and at long-last share my opinion on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it’s important to keep this in mind. I will analyze and critique the film to the best of my ability, but one thing I could never do justice to is describe the overwhelming feeling of joy I had while once more returning to a galaxy far, far away. It’s more than just nostalgia or the emergence of my inner-child. It’s the kind of feeling that takes place when you are experiencing something you know that you’ll remember forever, and so I could never accurately convey to you in words what that’s like. You just have to live it for yourself.

I lived it. I still have the smile on my face to prove it.

Pegboards: Allow Us to Re-introduce Ourselves

“You really should think about doing it.”

The story behind the formation of Pegboards isn’t really that unique, nor is it particularly exciting. Why would anyone want to know how a blog that is as inactive as this one came to be? More importantly, why would I want to write about that? The answer is a cliche, but an appropriate one: sometimes you have to go back to move forward.

It was 2013 and I was attending a psychology workshop at Auraria Campus. Seeing as it was spring break and the last place in the world I wanted to be was school, I was feeling a little out of sorts. This sensation only heightened when I got a text message from Kevin that revealed those words. “You really should think about doing it.” This was preceded by numerous other texts all containing a similar message. At that time, Mile High Report was hiring new writers to cover all things Broncos and Kevin was trying to talk me into applying. I resisted. He persisted. We both insisted!

A New Hope for Star Wars

This is a big weekend people. The future of Star Wars is at stake. I’m not talking about whether the film will be a box office smash. Why, that already happened in a flash!

Instead, I pose a simple question: can this new entry to a classic franchise resonate with people as thoroughly as the original films did? More importantly, will the new characters make us glad that we get to relive our childhood innocence once more and prevent the film from succumbing into an overhyped nostalgia trip?

The answer? We’ll see.
